One could easily take this for a Debussy poeme symphonique. One also feels the influence of Wagner in the expansive orchestration and overlong development of the melodies. Elegant music, but also no surprise if Ropartz did not achieve the fame of the better symphonic impressionists.I have nothing to compare this performance against, but the playing and the singing appear to be first class.Unfortunately, the sound dynamic is a bit constricted. At least in my pressing, the loudest passages (e.g the choir at the opening of A2) are clearly oversaturated, while the pianissimos (e.g. the opening of A1) will be a challenge to extract from the surface noise even with a good rig.
