Thanks to everyone for making this Yellow Peril project possible. If music is a language we all understand,
it won't be hard to get the meaning of this 4th compilation CD. Thanks to all the contributing musicians
for putting in their talent, time and effort. we got an interesting journey ahead...
And Dr. Fill, how can I possibly forget to thank you? Without your perseverance we would probably never have come this far.
A very special thanks to you, you Schaman of Schamans.

Liner Notes:
It was Winter of 1994. I was still aglow after seeing Steely Dan in concert for the first time the previous Summer. It was time to move away from the confines of proprietary bulletin board services like AOL Prodigy and check out the buzz surrounding this relatively new "internet". First thing I did was search for "Steely Dan". I turned up Jim McKays's excellent Dandom Digest and the rest, they say, is history.

Fellow Danfan Joe Murtha posted a message to the digest that he had created a new software program which combined images,
text and soundbites from the band called "The Steely Dan Reader Program". He suggested that subscribers send him a self addressed envelope and he'd mail a copy of this program out free of charge. I was immediately struck by the folly of such an endeavor. After all, I had this fancy new personal website sitting there collecting dust and I figured what better use than to make this new program available for download.

A lot has changed since Summer of 1995. The Steely Dan Reader program has morphed into The Complete Digital Steely Dan v3.0, the Banyantrees.net (as it's now called) is almost 9 Years old, has weathered 6 makeovers, three forum changes, the band has released three albums, one live DVD and toured four times. But beyond the activities surrounding the band something far more important has occurred. In the 9 years I've been running the banyantrees.net it's the camaraderie and sense of community that keeps pushing me forward and keeps me actively engaged. Even during the long dry spells between tours and albums, the commonly, which has it's roots in the digest and the guestbook, continues to thrive.

Not satisfied with our most favored sons production pace we must find other things to occupy our time. Since starting the guestbook in July of 1995, there have been numerous gatherings planned around various Steely events. And many having nothing at all to do with the band or a tour. New Orleans Jazzfest has turned out to be a annual occurrence for a few of the regulars for instance. A couple of other memorable "danfests" as they've since been called include Virginia Beach in 1997 and San Diego in 2002.

Sometime back in the mid-nineties it was suggested by Clas and Lisa that perhaps the musicians who frequented the banyantrees.net forum might consider putting out a CD of original recordings. The project was eventually marshaled and run by John Warren (JWMalibu). He ran the project successfully for the first two years. The 3rd release was organized by Brett Barbey, and now, for the fourth and final(?) release, Clas has taken over the reigns for the project he originally inspired.

Profit has never been the goal of this project. In each case the cost of the CD's has been shouldered by the person coordinating the release itself. In many cases all that is asked is reimbursement for postage costs. not only has the banyantrees.net and the rest of the Steely Dan internet community served as a great outlet for like-minded folks to connect, it too has served as a way for musicians to collaborate and share their work. Though the production value varies from musician to musician, these recordings serve as reminder of what we all are passionate about. Music is the common thread that brings us together. It's almost becoming cliche at this point but the internet has made it possible for a level of collaboration that most of us never dreamed possible a few short years ago.
BUT STILL, WHO'D A THINK IT BACK IN THE SUMMER of 1995
